I think that because of his history he was able to relate to the people and stand up for them. In a way he was standing up for himself as well. Hew was given the gift education and freedom and felt that they deserved the same chance that he was lucky enough to received. He goes on to explain that the only reason that the Spanish offered there support was so that with all the internal struggle, that afterwards they would be able to overwhelm those left and take them for slaves.
